The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, recently observed Mental Health Week from October 7th to October 12th, 2023. This week-long event aimed to create awareness about mental health among the masses and was conducted through various institutions associated with the DEPwD.

Throughout the week, more than 60 places across the country organized a range of activities such as awareness generation programs, skits, webinars, rallies, health checkups, quizzes, and workshops. These activities aimed to educate people about mental health and promote a better understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

One of the highlights of the Mental Health Week observance was the poster competition at CRC Gorakhpur. This competition provided a platform for individuals to express their thoughts and ideas about mental health through art. National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID) RC Navi Mumbai conducted a national-level online CRE (Continuing Rehabilitation Education) program on “Promoting Mental Health Wellbeing of PwIDs (Persons with Intellectual Disabilities) & their Families.” This program saw the participation of 130 rehabilitation professionals who gained insights into promoting the mental health of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families.

In addition to these events, there was also an observance of Mental Health Week through Nukkad Natak (street plays) at the railway station in Sehore, organized by the National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation (NIMHR). These street plays served as a powerful medium to reach a broader audience and raise awareness about mental health.

The observance of Mental Health Week was not limited to these mentioned activities; other national institutes, CRCs (Composite Regional Centers), and affiliated institutions also participated in various events and programs to spread awareness about mental health.

By conducting such initiatives, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities is working towards creating a society that is more inclusive and supportive of individuals with disabilities. Mental health is a significant aspect of overall well-being, and it is crucial that everyone has access to the necessary resources and support systems. Through the observance of Mental Health Week, the department aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversations about this vital topic.
